Free Fall-Themed Spanish Flashcards and Coloring Book for Your Preschooler or Toddler
Unbelievably, summer is coming to an end. I am in such denial, but at the same time, I am super excited for the fall season to makes its arrival. Goodbye, scorching heat, mosquitoes, and sunburn. Bring on the beautiful fall colors, cool weather, and pumpkins!!!!
Fall is my favorite season, by far. However, it always seems to come and go in the blink of an eye. That is why Lennox and I have gotten a big jump start on all of our fall activities. Check out some fall crafts we made here. Now, we are just waiting for the weather to cool down to start making our rounds to the pumpkin patches, sunflower fields, and anywhere fall-related.
In the meantime, we have been doing a lot of indoor crafting and learning about fall. Since Lennox is starting preschool in September, and will soon be learning mostly in English, I wanted to teach him about fall in Spanish. I made some nifty Spanish fall-themed flashcards.
What to do with the flashcards:
With the flashcards, we talk about the words, find items that correspond to each flashcard, and sort them. I also printed out two of them to play a fall memory game. He loves it!
Below are examples of some the flashcards.
I also made a few fall-themed coloring pages in Spanish that Lennox has enjoyed coloring.
Both the flashcards and the coloring book are both great visual items to help your toddler or preschooler learn about fall. I wanted to share these with you so you, mom and dad, grandma or grandpa, aunt or uncle, or loved-one, can learn fall Spanish words side-by-side with your child.
It is never too late to start exposing your child to a new language. This quote by Scholastic sums it all up in one paragraph:
“Language -with all of its magnificent complexity- is one of the greatest gifts we give our children. Yet, we so often treat our verbal communication with children in a casual way. It is a misconception that children learn language passively. Language acquisition is a product of active, repetitive, and complex learning. The child's brain is learning and changing more during language acquisition in the first six years of life than during any other cognitive ability he is working to acquire. How much easier this learning process can be for children when adults are active participants!”
I started studying Spanish in my freshman year of high school. I loved it so much that I went on to receive my BA and MA in Spanish Translation and Latin American Studies. Even though I love being fluent in Spanish, it took many years and a lot of dedication. I wish I would have learned it earlier on. I might have acquired it a lot faster.
That is why I have used my degrees to Lennox's benefit by only speaking to him in Spanish. Check out seven ways I teach him as a nonnative speaker here. Even though it takes a lot of work, I am determined that my kids learn Spanish first that way, they can have a jump start and master two languages.
I hope you enjoy these flashcards, and if so, I plan on making holiday-themed flashcards for every holiday, so stay tuned. Teachers, these would also be great in the classroom.
