A Cars Color Learning Activity in Spanish for Bilingual Children (Free Printable)

Over the past couple of weeks, Lennox’s speech has drastically improved.

As a bilingual parent, I was concerned that my nonnative Spanish was interfering with Lennox’s speech development; however, after some research, I relaxed after realizing that children develop communication skills at all different paces.

Well, not only has Lennox’s Spanish flourished in the past couple of weeks with him now being able to connect short sentences; “mami, no quiero” or, “¿Dónde está el carro azul?, but I’ve also realized that he now understands the difference between Spanish and English.

The other night, we were reading a book and talking about animals. When Lennox would name the animal in English, I would frown. Then I would ask him to tell me the animal in Spanish. He would laugh and then say the animal in Spanish.

As much as I was not pleased with his initial attempt to say each animal in English—since we only speak to him in Spanish at home— my bilingual parenting heart was so happy that he not only knows one vocabulary but two. I have been waiting for this moment for almost three years!!!

He is soaking up everything that he hears at home, and the English he is learning at his play-based preschool.

One area in Spanish he is struggling with is colors. Every time I ask him in Spanish, ¿qué color es esto? (what color is this?), he always responds in English, or if he responds in Spanish, his response is always azul (blue).

Therefore, our focus this week has been practicing colors. That’s why I decided to take his favorite toys, cars, and turn it into a color learning activity.

How to play? Easy peasy,

  1. Get on the floor and play cars with your child in the minority language.
  2. Begin with imaginary car play for a little bit and then take the lead and start organizing the color of the cars onto the different parking lots.
  3. Talk about the color of the cars while “driving” them to the parking lot. Here are some examples “Vamos a estacionar el carro azul”, ” El carro rojo está cansado, va a descansar un ratito en el estacionamiento.” “Vrroooom, aquí va el carro amarillo a su estacionamiento.”
  4. Add a couple of the same colors to a parking lot to help your child understand that you are sorting the cars.
  5. Lastly, ask them to help you park the cars in the right spot.
  6. If they get it right, applaud them and say “you did it!”
  7. If they get it wrong, you can make a loud “eeeeeerrrr” buzzer sound to keep the game light and fun and to encourage them to try again! Lennox got a kick out of me making this sound and would purposely continue to put them in the wrong spots. Ha!

Just wanted to share that my son would also do that thing with the color. We would ask him smart color something was in English or Spanish and he always would say blue/Azul. He is getting better now. Thank you for helping us with all your wonderful resources and sharing your experiences!
